    The influence and use of color in Interior Decoration

    Colors act in three basic ways: active, passive and neutral. You can easily match every room’s colors to your personal desires, to your taste and to the room’s purpose. Light colors are expansive and airy, making rooms seem larger and brighter. Dark colors are sophisticated and warm; they give large rooms a more intimate appearance.

    Let’s take a closer look at colors and learn what they can do to a room.

    Red raises a room’s energy level. The most intense color, it pumps the adrenaline like no other hue. It is a good choice when you want to stir up excitement, particularly at night. In the living room or dining room, red draws people together and stimulates conversation. In an entryway, it creates a strong first impression.

    Red has been shown to raise blood pressure and speed respiration and heart rate. It is usually considered too stimulating for bedrooms, but if you’re typically in the room only after dark, you’ll be seeing it mostly by lamplight, when the color will appear muted, rich and elegant.

    Yellow captures the joy of sunshine and communicates happiness. It is an excellent choice for dining rooms and bathrooms, where it is energizing and uplifting. In halls, entries and small spaces, yellow can feel expansive and welcoming.

    Even though yellow although is a cheery color, it is not a good choice for main color schemes. Studies show that people are more likely to lose their temper in a yellow interior. Babies also seem to cry more in yellow rooms. In large amounts, this color tends to create feelings of frustration and anger. In chromo therapy, yellow is believed to stimulate the nerves and purify the body.

    Blue is said to bring down blood pressure and slow respiration and heart rate. That is why it is considered calming, relaxing and serene, and it is often recommended for bedrooms and bathrooms.

    A pastel blue that looks pretty on the paint chip can come across as unpleasantly chilly on the walls and furnishings, however, especially in a room that receives little natural light. If you opt for a light blue as the primary color in a room, balance it with warm hues for the furnishings and fabrics.

    To encourage relaxation in social areas such as family rooms, living rooms, or lounges consider warmer blues, such as periwinkle, or bright blues, such as cerulean or turquoise. Blue is known to have a calming effect when used as the main color of a room — but go for softer shades. Dark blue has the opposite effect, evoking feelings of sadness. Refrain from using darker blues in your main color scheme.

    Green is considered the most restful color for the eye. Combining the refreshing quality of blue and the cheerfulness of yellow, green is suited for almost any room on the house. In the kitchen, green cools things down; in a family room or living room, it encourages unwinding but has enough warmth to promote comfort and togetherness.

    Green also has a calming effect when used as a main color for decorating. It is believed to relieve stress by helping people relax. It is also believed to help with fertility, making it a great choice for the bedroom.

    Purple, in its darkest values (eggplant, for example), is rich, dramatic and sophisticated. It is associated with luxury and creativity; as an accent or secondary color, it gives a scheme depth. Lighter versions of purple, such as lavender and lilac, bring the same restful quality to bedrooms as blue does, but without the risk of feeling chilly.

    Orange evokes excitement and enthusiasm, and is an energetic color. While not a good idea for a living room or for bedrooms, this color is great for an exercise room; it will bring out all the emotions that you need released during your fitness routine. In ancient cultures, orange was believed to heal the lungs and increase energy levels.

    Neutrals (black, gray, white and brown) are basic to the decorator’s tool kit. All-neutral schemes fall in and out of fashion, but their virtue lies in their flexibility: Add color to liven things up; subtract it to calm things down.

    Black is best used in small doses as an accent. Indeed, some experts maintain that every room needs a touch of black to ground the color scheme and give it depth. To make the job easier, rely on the interior designer’s most important color tool: the color wheel.

    Crimson can make some people feel irritable. Invoking feelings of rage and hostility, this is a color that should be avoided as the main color of a room. Sitting for long periods of time in a room painted in this color will likely affect the peace and harmony you are striving to create in any area.

    Gray: Gives a sense of relaxation and serenity, use these colors in bathrooms or offices.

    Brown: Like green, brown's natural roots give it a relaxing touch. Choose it for rooms where people gather and furniture groupings that will encite conversation.

    White: Relates a sense of cleanliness and purity. It is great fpr defining a space, but use white in conjunction with other colors since too much reads as sterile.

    How to save lives on Cruise Ships by choosing the right Polyurethane Foam for your furniture

    Furniture on cruise ships all have something in common: cushioning is made out of Polyurethane Foam which must satisfy the criteria to ignitability of upholstered furniture according to IMO Res. A.652(16).

    Clearly, polyurethane is hardly an ideal material for furniture as it requires the addition of styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN) copolymer polyols to increase its load bearing properties—a practice that also increase the material’s flammability. Manufacturers have tried several ways of making polyurethane safer. One is to cover it with a flame-retardant material; the other is to modify the foam so that it burns less quickly.

    After surveying thousands of furniture pieces on different commercial vessels, we (Xaler Systems LLC) have noticed the preference of cruise ship furniture manufacturers is to use polyurethane foam covered with a flame-retardant material, as it meets the IMO Res. A652(16) and is relatively inexpensive. To use these materials and still meet the IMO fire safety regulations, high levels of halogenated flame retardants are needed to prevent ignition and to delay the rate of combustion. According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, there is a growing body of evidence that these flame retardants are associated with adverse health effects in animals and humans, including endocrine and thyroid disruption, impacts to the immune system, reproductive toxicity, cancer, and adverse effects on fetal and child development. In addition to its environmental safety hazards, there are many regulatory requirements worldwide limiting the use of halogenated flame retardants and, many such as TCPP, contain organo-tin catalysts, which are restricted or under increasing scrutiny from eco-labels.

    In response, many manufacturers have shifted to a polyurethane foam manufacturing that does not require flame retardants. These foams are known as Combustion Modified High Resilience Foams (CMHR Foams), which incorporate a melamine resin. This behaves as a flame retardant, protecting the melted polyols from catching fire by forming a hard coating on their surface. Other CMHR Foams rely on a kind of expandable graphite in the form of small platelets. When heated, the graphite expands 100-200 times to form a charred layer. This prevents oxygen reaching the interior of the foam, thus retarding both the ignition and the burning process.

    CMHR Foams were designed to meet the most severe, high-ignition source flammability tests—such as BS 5852, Crib 5 in the United Kingdom, Boston Fire Department Seating Test, F.A.A. Seat Cushion Requirements Sec. 25.853 (a) part I appendix F, California TB133 and IMO Res. A.652(16). Many tests have shown CMHR Foams took about six times as long as ordinary foam to burn, giving people more time to escape during a fire hazard situation.

    The benefits of CMHR Foams over the ordinary fire retardant foams are evident and outweigh the price difference between them. Xaler Systems LLC recommends Cruise lines and cruise operators to specify the CMHR Foams for all upholstered furniture and mattresses on new builds and also in refurbishing projects where foams need to be replaced, because it has improved fire prevention properties and no health or environmental hazards as the ordinary foams with halogenated flame retardants, guaranteeing the safety and well being of their guests and crew at all times.

    Cleaning and Disinfecting Tips to eradicate the Coronavirus and avoid damaging Interior Surfaces

    Washing hands and cleaning and disinfecting high-touch surfaces are two of the best ways to defend against spreading the coronavirus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

    As COVID-19 spreads, you’ve probably already learned the proper technique for washing your hands and which cleaners can destroy a coronavirus.

    Following are some tips that will help prevent the spread of pathogens and diseases without damaging your interior surfaces:

    ·       Avoid the indiscriminant use of detergents and disinfectants on different types of surfaces. Read the labels to make sure the cleaning products are safe to use in the surfaces where they are being applied.

    ·       Alcohol solutions that contain at least 70 percent alcohol are effective against coronavirus, according to the CDC. For the most part, nearly every interior surface of a vessel can be cleaned and disinfected with isopropyl alcohol. Most surfaces like plastic trim to painted chrome to imitation leather—have been tested to ensure they don’t degrade when exposed to pure isopropyl alcohol. It’s even possible to rub the exterior surface of soft cloth upholstery with alcohol in order to clean it. Leathers and imitation leathers have urethane coatings for protection, which is safe to clean with alcohol. But over time, cleaning leather with alcohol can leave it susceptible to damage and discoloration.

    ·       Bleach (0.1%) and Hydrogen Peroxide (0.5%) should only be used on high resistance materials and fabrics. Make sure these chemicals are properly diluted in water and check the labels of the fabric or material to make sure they will not have an adverse effect on it.

    ·       Avoid ammonia-based cleaners on shiny surfaces, as they can damage their gloss, anti-glare and anti-fingerprint coatings.

    ·       Vigorous washing with soap and water can also destroy a coronavirus. Coronaviruses are surrounded by a protective envelope that helps them to infect other cells, and destroying that envelope can effectively disarm them. Soap and water are also safe for most interiors—especially fabrics and older leather that may have begun to crack. Just be sure not to scrub too hard, because friction from cleaning also participates in the destruction or deterioration of surfaces. Most leathers are dyed, and cleaning too vigorously can remove the dye, in some cases people believe their light-colored leathers are getting dirtier as they scrub it, which isn’t the case. “It’s not getting dirtier; you’re removing all the color on top.”

    ·       Take care of your leather upholstery after you clean it, by using a good leather cleaner, then a good leather conditioner to hydrate it.

    ·       Use warm water when cleaning surfaces, be sure to verify the ideal water temperature allowed on the label of the material. Avoid using vapor on soft furnishings as high temperatures can cause damage to fabric, vinyl and/or leather.

    ·       Rinse with water all surfaces where disinfectants and soaps have been used.

    ·       Make sure to ventilate and dry all of your soft surfaces after they have been washed, because humidity is a source for the growth and spread of pathogens, mildew and diseases.

    ·       Training your staff in cleaning procedures, material handling and reading the care labels on furniture will be of utmost importance in preserving the integrity of soft surfaces and guaranteeing a longer life span.

    These tips will help ship owners preserve materials on soft surfaces and avoid the spread of diseases like the Coronavirus, but the new sanitary protocols that will be in place after cruise lines begin sailing will shorten the life of upholstery due to the effects of chemicals, friction from cleaning, discoloration, etc.

This is an unsustainable practice as it destroys the habitats of animals and plants, while increasing landfills, greenhouse gas emissions and climate change.

    Cruise ship companies, hotels, restaurants and other commercial entities are challenged with making sustainable choices that are as environmentally friendly as possible.
